Discovering the NSBRC- Swindon
Tucked away in Swindon’s Lydiard Fields, just off Great Western Way, the National Self Build & Renovation Centre (NSBRC) is the UK’s premier permanent hub for independent building, renovation, retrofit, and home-improvement projects.
Officially established in 2007, and since 2014 employee-owned, the centre has helped hundreds of thousands of individuals and families envision, plan, and realize better, more sustainable homes.
If you’re considering building your own home, renovating a property, or upgrading your comfort and energy efficiency, the NSBRC is something of a one-stop shop for inspiration, advice, and contacts.
What to See & Do
Visiting the NSBRC is more than peering at brochures — it’s about immersive, hands-on exploration. Here are some highlights:
1. Trade Village & Exhibitors
Over 200 permanent exhibitor stands fill the Trade Village, showcasing the latest in materials, components, systems, and technologies for building and renovation.
You’ll find everything from insulation, windows, and roofing systems to renewables, structural systems, finishes, and interiors.
2. Full-size and Demonstration Buildings
One of the centre’s big draws is the life-size demonstration houses and renovation house. These show real techniques in action — e.g. from groundworks and foundations to roofs, insulation, structural assemblies, and renovation sequencing.
Guided audio tours help visitors understand key decisions and trade-offs in renovation projects.
3. Expert Helpdesk
Perhaps the most valuable resource: a free helpdesk, staffed (usually Wednesday–Sunday) by independent experts who can review your plans, answer technical questions, debug your ideas, and point you toward trusted professionals or suppliers.
From energy systems to structural concerns, they strive to give impartial advice you can trust.
4. Workshops, Events & Shows
The NSBRC holds a full calendar of events — workshops, seminars, demonstrations, trade shows, and themed “self build / renovation shows.”
These are excellent for learning new techniques, meeting suppliers, and connecting with other self builders.
5. Retrofit Zone & Special Zones
In recent years the centre has added specialized zones — e.g. a Retrofit Zone aimed at deep energy upgrades for existing properties — reflecting the growing interest in making older homes more efficient.
